DRUM WORKSHOP
Drums have been used throughout history in ritual, in prayer, as healing tools, and for accessing alternate states of consciousness. Many of the world’s cultures share in this tradition. It was my spiritual practice that led me to drum making. The experience of creating my first drum with all my heart and intention was extremely fulfilling and now I would like to share that craft with you.
In the workshop, students will be taught to create their own 18” elk hide drum. Deer, horse, or bear rawhide can also be made depending on availability of materials. Classes take between 2 to 3 hours to complete. All materials for the drum and it’s beater will be provided.
In-studio workshop $320. Available for some travel.

DRUM FAQ’S
I’m interested in a deep rich sound for my drum. What type of hide produces a really deep tone?
Generally a thicker hide such as Moose or Buffalo would produce a deep rich tone though that is not guaranteed. We have made elk hide drums that sound much richer than what you would expect. With the added thickness of a hide also comes more weight which is something to consider if you expect to drum for a lengthy period of time.
Synthetic or rawhide drumheads?
There have been many discussions and opinions on using synthetic drums versus ones made with animal rawhide. Rawhide is an organic material which is susceptible to changes in weather. Slight fluctuations in humidity can drastically alter its sound. There are simple (but not permanent) ways to correct this which we will discuss in class. Expect that there will be changes in how it sounds. If you are looking for a drum that delivers a consistent tone, perhaps a synthetic drum such as a Remo is best for you. Synthetic drums are just as effective in journey and healing work.
Why do you only offer an 18” frame?
I’ve found that this particular size offers the best general sound for most people. Larger frames also require larger hides which means weight and price becomes a factor for some.
How do I take care of my drum?
Very little is needed in caring for your drum. A light dusting with a clean dry cloth is sufficient. Avoid applying cleaners or oils to the drum head. The following are some strict rules to follow:
- Do not keep your drum where there could be extremes in temperature such as next to a fireplace or a window.
- Do not leave your drum in your car, especially the trunk. We spoke earlier of how humidity affects your drum but extreme heat could also be even more detrimental. Humidity can slowly be drawn out if a drum but heat can irreparably dry it resulting in cracking.
- If your drum gets wet, let it dry slowly and naturally.
How do I sign up for a class?
Simply send me an email and we can arrange an available date and time. Because the process begins the day before our scheduled time, I would ask that you notify me at least 24 hours in advance if for any reason you need to cancel.
Whether you use your drum for meditation, journey work, drum circles, self healing, or in service to heal others, it is my sincere wish that your intentions manifest in the most positive way in your life and in the lives of those you touch.
